After a leisurely sea day sailing across the Tyrrhenian Sea, Azura docked in the early morning at Civitavecchia, Italy. Having visited Rome made times previously I chose an excursion away from the city to explore rural Lazio.

Quick breakfast in the buffet then disembarked to join my excursion to Civita di Bagnoregio. Located about an hour and a half from Civitavecchia, the hilltop settlement, founded over 2000 years ago by the Etruscans was once a thriving strategic settlement. However a history of earthquakes and erosion has resulted in a ‘dying city’ which was the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘the castle in the sky’.

On reaching Bagnoregio the group transferred by shuttle bus to a viewpoint offering a stunning view of the village.
From here the only means of access is by crossing the bridge on foot.

Once over the bridge, with the assistance of a local guide we explored the village.

Midday and time for lunch in a local restaurant.

Despite the village having only 11 inhabitants, the local eateries were reasonably priced.
I enjoyed an excellent aubergine ravioli and a glass of local wine for under €20.
After lunch I wandered back across the bridge and down to the coach meeting point for the journey through the Lazio countryside back to the ship.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
